Independent London pub group pays tribute to new till systems

Ribo Waring relies on solution from J2 and Hospitality Tills

New independent pub group, Ribo Waring Pub Company, has recently celebrated one year since the founding of its business, the acquisition of its first four pubs and the upgrade of its till systems to a solution from J2 Retail Systems and systems integrator, Hospitality Tills.

In 2006, independent publican Tony Murphy acquired the Masons’ Arms in Edgware, followed by the Station Hotel in Hither Green, the Railway Tavern in Mill Hill and Halfway House in Bovingdon. Each represents the best traditions of the London suburban local pub.

Whilst the pubs came equipped with tills, Tony Murphy decided to improve his point-of-sale systems, at both a hardware and software level. As he explains, system resilience and reliability were critical factors, as the pubs anticipated, and are now enjoying, very busy trading.

“Our system needed to be fast to train and easy to use by permanent and casual staff. As a new business, cost of ownership was also high on our list of priorities.”

Systems Integrator and J2 partner, Hospitality Tills, have assembled a package of hardware and software. Ten of J2’s latest 560 PC-based touchscreen tills have been installed across the four premises, each providing specialist front-office and back-office software designed with the pub trade in mind. Ribo Waring have opted for the largest display screens and make a virtue out of staff and customers being able to see items being entered into the tills.

The business, front-office and back-office, is now run from a single computer system. The software puts every needed function at the touch of a button. Sales history is immediately visible, and prices and products can be easily changed or added. The ability to increase the print size of on-screen items and to scan in product labels as keys makes for instant recognition at busy times.

“All this translates into slick bar service and happy customers,” says Tony. “The system is very easy to use and we’ve found it exceptionally reliable which means we can cater for even the busiest trading times with confidence.”

Tony Murphy has set his sights on building a 10-strong pub group over the next few years. “The support from Hospitality Tills and J2 has been outstanding. I have a lot of faith in the systems and in the people who support them. I will be putting the same systems into my new pubs as they come on stream,” he concludes.
